One more dies of dengue, 460 others hospitalised across Bangladesh

At least one more patient died of dengue in Dhaka city in the past 24 hours till Tuesday morning, taking the official death toll to 54 across Bangladesh this year since January.

In the past 24-hour cycle ending at 8:00am on Tuesday, at least 460 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country, of them, 320 were hospitalised in Dhaka city and 140 in other places across the country, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services.

This is the third consecutive day this year as the daily dengue hospitalisation reported over 400, according to official data.

The mosquito-borne viral disease forced 14,822 to admit to health facilities across the country this year, said the DGHS release.

A total of 8,641 or 58.30 per cent of this year’s total hospitalisation was reported in the 27 days of September, which was also the monthly highest figure in 2022.

Excepting September, 3,521 patients were hospitalised in August followed by 1,571 in July, 737 in June, 163 in May, 126 in January, 23 in April, and 20 each in February and March, according to official data.

Currently, 1,738 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at various health facilities across the country including 1,314 at 50 private and public hospitals in the capital city.

The health directorate data covered only a limited government and private health facilities.

Of the total dengue deaths this year, 27 people died in Dhaka city, 23 in Chattogram and four in Barishal division.

Month-wise, one died in June, nine in July, 11 in August, and 33 till 27th day of September.

A total of 11,391 or about 77 per cent of dengue patients were reported to be hospitalised in Dhaka city.

In April, the health directorate in a pre-monsoon survey found a higher density of aedes mosquitoes in the capital compared with 2021, predicting a worsening dengue situation this year in the city unless preventive steps were taken.

The DGHS revealed its monsoon survey past week and found double mosquito density in Dhaka city compared with the pre-monsoon survey.
